트위터하다 우연히 보곤 꽂혀서
며칠째 시간만 나면 돌려보고 있는 영상이 있다.
아래 소개한다.
1. Ssing Ssing (씽씽)
트위터에서 이 링크를 올린 사람이 그랬다. 이런 한국 밴드는 도대체 어디서 보고 데려온거냐고. 나도 그게 궁금하네.
사실 국악 전공자들이 요새 컨템포러리한 곡 많이 들고 나와서 종종 듣긴 했는데, 이정도는 처음 본다. 두번째 달 음악을 들을 땐, 그냥 여전히 '크로스오버'인 느낌이었는데 이건 전혀 다르다. 이 '힙'함은 이길 수가 없어. 뭘로 이겨. 아 몰라 너무 좋아 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
*참고로 두 번째 곡은 여성 소리꾼이 리드하는데, 아, 진짜 이런 뭔가 '미친' 것 같은 사람들 너무 좋다.
Bob Boilen -- One look at (and listen to) the cross-dressing, Asian rock band SsingSsing and you would hardly think they're singing music inspired by traditional Korean folk. But SsingSsing isn't like any other band I've ever seen or heard.
한국 록 밴드 씽씽. 이 크로스드레싱 (이성의 옷을 입은) 밴드를 보자마자 이들이 한국의 전통 음악인 민요에서 영감을 얻은 노래를 부르리라고 감히 예측하긴 힘들 것이다. 무엇보다 씽씽은 내가 보거나 들어 본 여느 밴드들과 다르다.
The group sings a regional folk style called minyo and the gender bending look has to do with shamans not glamour. As singer Hee-moon Lee describes it, "In Korean traditional art, male shamans, called baksu, have the body of a male. But as mediums, they need more than a single sexual identity, because they're channeling both male and female spirits. When I act a female character and sing, I have to overcome the fact of my being a male sorikkun (singer), and try my utmost to bring a more neutral, unisex feeling to the performance. It sounds silly, but I feel like going back to the sensibilities of my youth, when I liked Madonna, helps."
씽씽은 민요라는 한국 민속 음악을 선보인다. 성별을 뛰어넘는 밴드의 비쥬얼은 글래머 록보단 한국의 샤먼인 무당과 관련있다. 보컬인 이희문은 다음과 같이 설명한다. "한국 전통 예술에서 남성 무당은 박수라고 부릅니다. 박수는 남자의 몸을 하고 있지만 무속인이라면 하나의 성 정체성만으로 자신의 역할을 다 할 순 없습니다. 왜냐면 박수무당은 남녀할 것 없이 모든 영혼을 이어주는 사람이니까요. 그래서 여성 화자의 역할을 하며 노래할 땐 제가 남자 소리꾼이라는 사실을 잊고 좀 더 중성적인 무대를 보여드리기 위해 최선을 다 합니다. 이상하게 들릴지 모르지만 마돈나를 좋아하던 어린 시절의 감수성을 되살리는 게 도움이 되는 것 같습니다."
The understated music, the small dramatic gestures and the costumes all combine for one of my most memorable Tiny Desk Concerts of all time.
과소평과된 씽씽의 음악과 그들의 극적인 몸짓, 의상 덕분에 이번 무대는 Tiny Desk Concerts 중 가장 기억에 남는 공연이 되었다.
2. Chance the Rapper
Chance는 내가 넘나 좋아하는 '절제된 너디함을 보여주는' 흑인 아티스트다.
너무 귀여운 게, 여기 나오는 게 너무 특별한 의미라서 시를 지어왔다며 공연 중간에 다른 뮤지션들과 다르게 자작시를 읊어준다.
귀여워서 내가 죽어버리는 줄 알았다.

Robin Hilton | July 5, 2017 — Chance The Rapper knew he wanted to try a different approach for his Tiny Desk performance, so he decided to do something he said he hadn't done in a long time. He wrote a poem. More specifically, he wrote a poem in the short time it took him to ride from his hotel in Washington, D.C. to the NPR Music offices. Calling it "The Other Side," Chance debuted it in the middle of his remarkable set, reading from his notes written out in black marker on sheets of typing paper.
"I still have all the keys that are of no use to me," he began. "They used to, though. On the other side was a mansion on a hill, complete with L.A. pools and fireplaces and a rim made specifically for people that lie about being six feet to dunk on."
Chance didn't get much further before he was interrupted by one of the hazards of performing in an actual, working office: a building-wide page for someone to call the mailroom. But Chance rolled with it, cracking a quick joke before starting over again.
The night before arriving for his Tiny Desk set, Chance performed for more than 23,000 people at Jiffy Lube Live, an outdoor theater in Bristow, VA. The sold out arena and amphitheater shows of his current tour offer a stark contrast to the first time I saw Chance in concert back in 2013. Then, he was a 19-year old upstart rapping and singing for a handful of people at a tiny club in Austin, Texas. A lot has changed since then, and quickly. Chance's most recent mix tape, Coloring Book, was widely ranked among the best albums of 2016 (some called it a masterpiece) and featured collaborations with a cast of hip-hop luminaries, from Kanye West to Lil Wayne and T-Pain.
Chance's poem "The Other Side" was sandwiched between an opening version of "Juke Jam" from Coloring Book and another special gift just for his Tiny Desk appearance, a moving cover of Stevie Wonder's 1974 song "They Won't Go When I Go."
